Meg pointed this idea out to me. So I did it. The end.
1. The first thing Celeste clearly remembers is clapping and laughing as her big brother tripped over his own feet. The second thing Celeste clearly remembers is bare feet on wet grass, and her own voice murmering that she was Rhaieen, and Eban would be back as soon as he shot the moons for her. She can't decide which memory comes next after all.
2. Lawrence was always horrible at telling old ballads as bedtime stories and pretending that he made them up. But it's still the reason why Celeste loves to read.
3. Somtimes, she has to squint, when she wants to see objects far away. She suspects that spectacles could do her well, but they would look a little silly, and very unladylike, so she's never told that to anybody, and tries to squint covertly.
4. Celeste always had tiny crush on Lord Fartgus. But Lawrence liked Lord Hasten much better.
5. Celeste always was a tiny bit afraid of Lord Hasten. But he was much better than Lord Tarmon.
6. When Lauren smiles, Celeste smiles, too, every single time. Lauren's smile is magic.
7. Felicia always came to balls with nicer dresses and hair, and everyone always wanted to talk to her. Isanae never seemed to make a mistake at anything, and she always knew exactly what she wanted to say. Celeste never told anyone that she was jealous.
8. But Celeste always secretly thought that her hair was much, much nicer than Felicia's, and that her best friend's blood must not be very pure. She never told anyone that, either.
9. Until she was thirteen, she never, ever remembered her dreams, except for one. She dreamed that Lawrence told her he would be home by nightfall with a flying horse from the north for her to ride. But he didn't come back at nightfall. Or by morning. He never came back.
Celeste still thinks about that dream, sometimes. She hates that dream.
10. Sometimes Celeste is seven, and sometimes, she's thirty. She can't remember ever being fifteen.
11. When she was a child, Eria would to sit Celeste in front of her mirror and brush her hair, 100 strokes before bed, all the while saying how pretty it was. Celeste played with the silver rose broach that Eria always left on the top of her wardrobe while she brushed. She never saw Eria actually wear the broach. She wondered if it was just there for her to play with.
12. Celeste gave up on counting stars at long time ago. The moons are prettier than the stars, and much easier to count.
13. Celeste used to bite her fingernails, until Lawrence told her that he knew someone who once bit his fingers to nothing. It took her six years to figure out it was just a story. She still won't bit her fingernails.
14. Celeste likes it when Lawrence calls her short.
15. Celeste has tried to pick a favourite season since she was nine. She loves the brilliant white snow of the winter, the many colours and falling leaves of the autumn, the green fields and yellow sunlight of the summer, and the new life that comes from every hollow in the spring. She hasn't given up on trying to choose yet, because, for some reason, she enjoys thinking about it.
16. She loathes being wrong.
17. Celeste loves to sit, and stare, and think, but she doesn't like thinking about the future. The future is large, frightening, and unending. The future is uncertain, and it can never be predicted or understood. Things should always be easy to understand. Even though she doesn't like thinking about the future, she always does.
18. Celeste has always envied Sawyer knowing Kail better than she does. Just a little bit.
19. Celeste wants Lawrence to marry someone like her. She isn't sure why, but she knows she'll be angry if he doesn't.
20. Even when she is very busy, Celeste always says three prayers a day. One prayer for the long life of her family. One prayer for the long life of Franel. One prayer that Lawrence will be a good lord. These days, her prayers make the back of eyes sting. Sometimes she tells herself she forgot to say them.
